George Ballantine began blending Scottish malt and grain whisky in the 19th century. In 1910 this led to the 'invention' of Ballantine’s Finest, which is still the best-known blend of Ballantine's, and which is still made according to the same recipe. All blends from this company are matured on bourbon barrels. They have a soft taste and a touch of Islay smoke.
