London-based Elixir Distillers specialises in bottlings of Scotch whisky, but they also bottle American, Irish and Japanese whiskies. The company releases three well-known series: Elements of Islay, featuring striking bottles and labels; The Single Malts of Scotland, offering vintage whiskies from all over Scotland; and Port Askaig, with bottles of unspecified Islay whiskies.
Until 2017 these series were released until 2017 under the name of Specialty Drinks Ltd., a wholesaler in spirits. Since 2017, the bottling of whisky has been housed in the independent Elixir Distillers branch.
The eighth Caol Ila bottling in Elixir Distillers’ Elements of Islay series was released in 2017. The single malt whisky was matured in five bourbon casks and bottled at 55.2% cask strength. It has received a score of about 86 points on Whiskybase so far.
In the Elements of Islay series, Elixir Distillers now also releases blended malts. Which Islay single malt whiskies are in this blend is unknown. Matured in sherry casks, the blend is given the keywords smoked tea, autumn fruit and winter spices. (54.5%)
New to Elixir Distillers' Elements of Islay series are the Islay blended malt whiskies. Released not in the well-known 50 cl, but in 70 cl bottles. Like this blend of Islay single malt whiskies, that matured in ex-bourbon casks. Bottled at 54.5%.
Well known and appreciated are the Elements of Islay editions from Elixir Distillers with cask strength Islay single malt whiskies. Now they also release blends of Islay single malts in that series. Like this one that aged in bourbon and sherry casks. 46%
This Glen Elgin bottling was released in 2020 in the renowned Single Malts of Scotland series. The single malt whisky matured for 13 years in a bourbon cask and is bottled at a cask strength of 56.3%. A dram full of fruit and minerals, a true Speysider.
The ninth Lagavulin bottling in Elixir Distillers’ Elements of Islay series was released in 2018. The single malt whisky was matured in 2 ex-Laphroaig casks and bottled at 57.6% cask strength. It has received a score of 88 points on Whiskybase so far.
The second Laphroaig bottling in Speciality Drinks’ Elements of Islay series was released in 2011. The single malt whisky was matured in bourbon casks and bottled at 64.1% (!) cask strength. It received a score of almost 86 points on Whiskybase so far.
The first Lochindaal bottling in Speciality Drinks’ Elements of Islay series was released in 2016. The single malt whisky matured in first-fill bourbon casks, is bottled at 62.5% cask strength and awarded a Whiskybase score of a good 88 points.
For those looking for a straightforward, well-peated, sturdy Islay single malt whisky for a reasonable price, this Port Askaig 100˚ is an option. Oily and creamy, salty-sweet taste with hints of peat and smoke in all phases. Bottled at 57.1%.
Port Askaig is the brand under which Elixir Distillers releases bottlings of peated Islay single malt whisky. This edition matured in a sherry cask. The resulting sherry notes are perfectly balanced with the whisky's distillery character. (50.5% ABV)
