The Glen Spey distillery started in 1879 as a converted oatmeal mill in Rothes, Speyside. Although the distillery is in the heart of the malt whisky region, it has always been 'underexposed'. This will have to do with the fact that Glen Spey actually only produced for blended whisky (especially for J&B) and has hardly produced any bottlings of its own.
A special feature of the Glen Spey production are the 'purifiers' on the spirit stills. They provide a greater 'reflux', which would result in a lighter, more delicate malt whisky.
