Kavalan is the brand of single malt whisky produced by the Yuan Shan Distillery in Taiwan. Kavalan is the name of the first tribe who lived in the mountain area where the distillery was built in 2005. The Kavalan whisky is distilled from Scottish and Scandinavian barley and matures primarily on casks of American oak. Because it gets very hot in Taiwan in the summer (up to 40˚ C), the whisky that is maturing evaporates much faster than in Scotland. The Kavalan whisky therefore matures for a minimum of 4 years, but not much longer, so as not to be confronted with empty casks. Due to the high temperature, the maturation process itself is faster: a 4-year-old Kavalan is therefore 'older' than a 4-year-old Scottish whisky.
Kavalan single malt whisky comes from Taiwan, but is made from Scottish and Scandinavian barley. Due to the subtropical climate, the whisky quickly becomes 'mature'. This bottling matured in bourbon casks and has a clear honey-vanilla character. (46%)
With this malt, matured in 8 different casks, the Taiwanese distillery Kavalan presents the total range of flavors that they produce. That is why this special whisky does not have a character of its own, but it is more than worthy of further investigation
Taiwan-based Yuan Shan Distillery has been making a well-regarded single malt whisky for about 15 years. This 2018 bottling matured for an unknown number of years in Oloroso sherry casks. That gives it characteristic notes of dried fruit and raisins. 46%
SMALL BOTTLE] Nice gift for someone who likes sherryed whisky, or for yourself to get acquainted with the sherryed single malt whiskies from Taiwanese Kavalan. Bottled at 57%, this sherry bomb is definitely not a dram for beginners!
Here is another single cask bottling of Kavalan single malt whisky. Due to the climate there, this Taiwanese whisky matures faster than, for example, Scotch whisky. This Soloist matured on a port cask. That yielded 223 bottles, so be quick! (58.6%)
Why the single malt whiskies from the Taiwanese Kavalan usually do not have an age indication is too long a story to tell here, but trust us: it is all right. Certainly it is with this single cask bottling: matured in a Vinho Barrique wine cask. (57.8%)
Due to the Taiwanese climate, Kavalan's single malt whisky matures rapidly. Stating the age does not give a good idea of what to expect. The age of this dram, matured in a bourbon cask, is therefore not mentioned either, but it's of Kavalan quality. 58.6%
