Kavalan is the brand of single malt whisky produced by the Yuan Shan Distillery in Taiwan. Kavalan is the name of the first tribe who lived in the mountain area where the distillery was built in 2005. The Kavalan whisky is distilled from Scottish and Scandinavian barley and matures primarily on casks of American oak. Because it gets very hot in Taiwan in the summer (up to 40˚ C), the whisky that is maturing evaporates much faster than in Scotland. The Kavalan whisky therefore matures for a minimum of 4 years, but not much longer, so as not to be confronted with empty casks. Due to the high temperature, the maturation process itself is faster: a 4-year-old Kavalan is therefore 'older' than a 4-year-old Scottish whisky.
Taiwan's Yuan Shan Distillery makes single malt whisky under the Kavalan brand. Especially known are the Soloist single-cask bottlings of which several thousand are already released. This Soloist aged in an Oloroso sherry cask. (54.8% ABV)
The single-cask bottlings in the Solist series from the Taiwanese Kavalan often score very high. Fortunately, new Soloists appear very regularly. Like this single malt whisky that matured in a wine cask and has notes like cocoa and tropical fruit. (54.8%)
