Corn whisky (or in America ' corn whiskey') is made from 100% corn. This whisky is therefore related to bourbon, the basic raw material of which is also maize, but which can also contain other grains. Only a few distilleries produce 100% corn whisky.
The Balcones Baby Blue is the first Texan whisky since the Prohibition in the 1920s. Made from roasted 'blue corn', an oily kind of corn. Balcones Distilling deliberately makes a young but complex dram with this whisky. Bottled at 46% ABV.
The young Texan distillery Balcones is always looking for whisky that stands out. It certainly succeeded with its Brimstone corn whisky. Smoked with sun-dried Texan oak, this is a combination of notes of fresh fruit and a bold smokiness. At 53%.
In addition to corn, bourbon production also uses other grains. But the lesser-known straight corn whiskey, like this one, is distilled from 100% corn. This Brachadair bottling comes from Heaven Hill Distilleries in Kentucky. 13 years old, at 61.0%.
