Single malt whisky is a mixture of malt whisky from casks of the same distillery. Malt whisky is made from barley malt and distilled in pot stills, and has matured for at least 3 years in oak barrels. This whisky usually has a for the distillery characteristic flavor. Is considered the classic whisky.
Benromach is not averse to experimenting. This is also the case with this edition in their Contrast series. The single malt whisky is distilled from barley malt with a high enzyme content, a malt normally used for grain whisky. (12y, bourbon aged, 46%)
This is a bottle from batch #3 of Benromach 2014 single malt whisky in the Cask Strength series. The malt aged for about 10 years in sherry and bourbon casks. A full-bodied dram with notes like stewed fruit, marmalade, a hint of smoke and aniseed. (60.6%)
The subtle smoke that characterizes Benromach single malt whisky and the influence of both the bourbon and sherry casks on which it matured provide a rich palette of notes. The maturation period of 21 years certainly plays a role in this. Bottled at 43%.
Fruit notes such as ripe apple, mandarin orange and raspberry, notes such as black pepper, cloves and, for example, beeswax, you'll find all this and more in this extraordinary Benromach bottling. The 40-year-old single malt whisky is bottled at 56.5%.
As a home distillery, Bladnoch was already producing single malt whisky in 1817. Now, about two centuries and many owner changes later, Bladnoch is making a fresh, new start. This bottling is part of that: 14 years and matured in sherry casks. (46,7%)
In 2017, Cadenhead's Authentic Collection released a bottling of a 26-year-old Bladnoch single malt whisky. This malt from the 'Queen of the Lowlands' aged in a bourbon cask and is bottled at 49%. An oily, buttery dram with lots of fruit, honey and nuts.
And yet another special WhiskySponge bottling: it is a 34-year-old Bladnoch single malt whisky that matured in a bourbon cask from which the bottler had already extracted 50 bottles in 2023. This created more room for flavour-inducing reactions. (55.1%)
Released on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Bladnoch Distillery. This single malt is a mix of whisky that matured on bourbon and Samsara wine casks. This resulted in a complex, yet easily drinkable dram. Not a moment boring, this Bladnoch.
Lowlands distillery Bladnoch has a rich history of closings and changes of ownership. In 2015 Bladnoch made a fresh start with their single malt whisky in newly designed bottles. Like this Vinaya that matured in bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks. (46.7%)
Blair Athol is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. In 2003, a 27-year-old bottling of the single malt whisky appeared in the Rare Malts Selection series. Creamy, dark fruit, marzipan, oak, flowers, and chocolate are just some of the keywords.
Blair Athol is one of Scotland's oldest distilleries, but not one of the most famous. This is certainly not due to the quality of the single malt whisky, as this bottling proves. The Highlander matured for 13 years in a Ruby Port cask. (57.7%)
The Rotterdam Roger's Whisky Company releases blended malt bottlings under the name Roger's Hidden Treasures. This is the 2015 Campbeltown Blended Malt. Rumor has it that it is a Glen Scotia single malt whisky with a few drops of another malt. (54%)
This Blue Spot is an Irish single pot-still whiskey, distilled by Midleton (1975-). Because it matured for 7 years in bourbon, sherry and madeira casks, it has a rich flavour palette, ranging from butter cake to wine gum, from apricot to guava. (58.4%)
This 12-year malt is part of the core range of Bowmore, one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. A good example of a typical Bowmore, this whisky, with a nice balance between peat smoke and citrus and vanilla. Bottled at 40%.
A 12-year-old sherried Bowmore single malt whisky for this price; you don't want to miss that out! The mildly peated Islay malt matured in Oloroso and bourbon casks before having an oloroso finish. Released in the Sherry Oak Cask series. (40%)
This 15 year old single malt whisky is a standard bottling from the old Bowmore Distillery on whisky island Islay. For most of those 15 years, the peated whisky matured in bourbon casks, the last part, the finish, was in sherry casks. Bottled at 43%.
Although this is a core bottling of the Bowmore Distillery, each edition is slightly different. But the basis is always the same: the single malt whisky matured for 18 years in bourbon and sherry casks, yielding notes of mild peat smoke and tropical fruit
The folks at Adelphi now have their own distillery, and that keeps them busy enough. However, in 2017, they were still highly regarded bottlers, and they released, among other bottlings, this 27-year-old Bowmore single malt whisky. (52%, score 90.3)
In the Symington's Choice series we have seen some stellar bottlings. The vaults of Signatory seem to contain endless hidden treasures. A 1997 aged for 25 years, almost hitting the 90 point mark. We have no doubt this will be good!
A pretty special bottling, which the Taiwanese The Whisky Blues presents here. It is a Bowmore single malt whisky. You don't often see this as a third-party bottling. The medium-peated Islay malt aged in a sherry cask for 26 years and is bottled at 50.1%.
'Sweet smoke on the water', a fine description by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society of the 20 year old Bowmore single malt whisky that they released on the occasion of the Fèis Isle Festival 2017. It scores almost 90 points on Whiskybase. (54.2%)
Bowmore, on the Isle of Islay, is one of Scotland's oldest and best-known distilleries. Next to standard bottlings, Bowmore also releases special editions of their single malt whisky, like this one: matured for 21 years in select French wine casks, 48.4%.
The eighth Bowmore bottling in Elixir Distillers’ Elements of Islay series was released in 2020. The 16-year-old single malt whisky matured in bourbon and sherry casks and is bottled at 51.2% cask strength. It has a score of 87 points on Whiskybase.
Looking for an old-fashioned, special Bowmore? Here's your bottle! It is from a bottling from 1999 for which the Islay single malt whisky matured in Claret Bordeaux wine casks. Maturing or finishing in wine casks was exceptional at the time. (750ml, 56%)
