14 Whiskies to Drink Right Now

Wherever (and whenever) you’re reading this—from steamy midsummer backyards to late-winter firesides, a great whisky knows no hemisphere. Here’s a 14-bottle lineup that should scratch just about any style itch.

We're often asked "what's a good whisky for this season?"

At our shop in Rotterdam, we usually have a ready answer, but here on the webshop it's a bit different. We don't know what the weather and the vibe is like near you. Tropically breezy? Après-ski ready? Sweltering humidity?

We've grouped these newest recommendations generally into two hemispheres, fitting Northern and Southern seasons. (Whisky fans in the tropics, we see you too! There are some fab tropical whiskies here.)

Northern Hemisphere Selections

1. Inchmurrin 12 was our Whisky of the Month for July, and it's equally delicious in August. Packed with orchard fruit, honeycomb, and luxurious waxiness. Scores from Whiskybase members are proof that you agree! · 46 %

2. Glen Scotia Double Cask Rum Cask Finish is a fun one. Pure Campbeltonian brine washing up on tropical shores. Fruit, vanilla, and ginger snaps. This is a fun time on the beach. · 46 %

3. Glen Ord 2012 Signatory Vintage 100 Proof – Signatory's 100-Proof is the Series of the Summer, with bottles flying off the shelves. We especially like this Glen Ord. So fresh: green apples, cracked pepper, and rich maltiness. This is a delightful sipper. (And the perfect backbone for a malty highball!) · 57.1 %

4. Dailuaine 10 year-old James Eadie – We love a lot of these recent James Eadie releases, especially when they're from oft-overlooked distilleries like Dailuaine. If you want a desserty bottle, this whisky will wrap you in toffee, berry pie, and soft smoke. · 46 %

5. Amrut Kurinji – Amrut's Single Malts of India series is liable to blow you away with its fantastic new (lest we say exotic) flavors. We love this one for its jasmine, mango, and spice combo. · 50 %

6. Thy Spelt-Rye comes from the Thy farm distillery in Denmark. If you're a Rye fan, this bottle is for you: vanilla cream soda, dill, carraway, and light soot. · 48 %

7. Bowmore 2014 Douglas Laing – You can never go wrong with Bowmore, one of our go-to distilleries for a barbecue-worthy bottle. Few whiskies can top the meatiness, lemon-zest, and salty finish of this one. Pair it with four favorite local IPA for a mouthwatering evening. · 48.4 %

Southern Hemisphere Selections

1. Torabhaig Sound of Sleat – Is there a snap in the air? You can almost feel the Isle of Skye running through you in this whisky. Ripe citrus, medicinal peat, and a youthful snap in the whisky itself. · 46 %

2. Thy Bøg – Back to Denmark for this one. A crackle of beechwood smoke, caramelized cereals, and herbaceous lift at the finish. Lovely dram this one! · 52 %

3. Glenallachie 12 is another recent Whisky of the Month at our shop. This is what you get when you marry raisins, fudge, dark chocolate, and a dusting of clove in one glass. · 46 %

4. Kilchoman Loch Gorm is plum jam and hearth fire. There's a good dose of sweet iodine here too. · 46 %

5. Ardnamurchan AD – This "new classic" could just as easily have been in our Northern Hemisphere selections. And it's perfect for equatorial heat or island getaways as well. If you haven't yet tried the NAS Ardnamurchan core bottle, carpe diem! · 46.8 %

6. Longrow Peated (Batch 25/28) – Like the Ardnamurchan, this is an NAS bottle, but this one a bit more full bodied. Think sugary campfire meets fishing pier. An acquired taste, maybe—but one that always makes us happy! · 46 %

7. Caol Ila 2015 Signatory Vintage 100 Proof – We'll close off this list with a peaty classic. Top-notch Caol Ila that is unmistakable grilled lemon, ashy peat, and sea spray. · 57.1 %
