In February 2019, Angus MacRaild thought it was time to start bottling whiskey yourself. He ran the website Whisky Sponge and was already known as an enthusiastic whisky writer and host. And now he selects the finer whisky casks himself to bottle them for other whisky enthusiasts.
The bottlings of Decadent Drinks co-founder Angus MacRaild are released under the WhiskySponge label. So is this 24-year-old Ardmore single malt whisky. The Highlander matured in a refill bourbon cask and is bottled in 250 bottles at cask strength (52.4%)
The label of this WhiskySponge bottling may look very funny, but the content is serious: this is a 31-year-old Auchentoshan single malt whisky, packed with flavour and rich aromas, a top edition of this bourbon matured Lowlander! (53.6%)
And yet another special WhiskySponge bottling: it is a 34-year-old Bladnoch single malt whisky that matured in a bourbon cask from which the bottler had already extracted 50 bottles in 2023. This created more room for flavour-inducing reactions. (55.1%)
This WhiskySponge bottling results from the 'marriage' of two casks, a 1st fill sherry and a 1st fill bourbon cask, in which Glentauchers single malt whisky has matured for 18 years. This marriage yielded a total of 250 bottles at a strength of 53% ABV.
With the WhiskySponge bottlings, we have a lot of interesting offers again! Like this Orkney Sponge, for example: a 23-year-old Highland Park single malt whisky. The malt matured in a refill hogshead, a bourbon cask. Bottled at cask strength (57%).
You don't come across Inchgower single malt whisky very often, and then almost always as an independent bottling. WhiskySponge has saved some Inchgower from disappearing in blends and releases here a 21-year-old, bourbon-aged edition of this Speysider.
Here comes the Scottish bottler WhiskySponge with a real surprise: a Saillt Mór, a German single malt whisky from Destillerie Ralph Hauer. Released under the name WhiskySchwamm. The whisky matured for 8 years in a bourbon cask. Bottled at 57.1%.
The sister bottling of the WhiskySchwamm Saillt Mór, Edition No. 73B, this WhiskySponge edition. A German single malt whisky. And this one also matured for 8 years on a 1st fill bourbon cask (a barrel), and it was also bottled at 57.1%. Curious?
