The world's best known and best selling single malt whisky comes from the Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown, Speyside, with around 10 million bottles annually. The total pure alcohol production of Glenfiddich is around 14 million liters per year. The distillery was founded by William Grant in 1886 and is still owned by William Grant & Sons. In 1963, Glenfiddich was probably the first distillery to come up with an own, official single malt bottling. With such success that the name Glenfiddich became an established brand, and 'single malt' an official category in the whisky industry. Some argue that the triangular bottle in which the Glenfiddich whisky is bottled is one of the reasons for the success of Glenfiddich single malt.
