The Glenmorangie Distillery in the North Highlands is the pioneer of 'finishing' single malt whisky. Around 1995 the distillery released whiskies that had been aged in port, madeira or sherry casks at the end of the maturing period. Many other distilleries and bottlers have now embraced this 'finishing' technique. This method has even become a hype in the whisky world.
Glenmorangie started whisky production in 1849. The pot stills of the distillery are among the largest in the world. Glenmorangie releases many distillery bottlings. There are, however, strikingly few independent bottlings. Moreover, the distillery generally does not want independent bottlings to mention the name Glenmorangie.
This Glenmorangie single malt whisky was bottled at the beginning of this century for tax-free shops and is, therefore, in a 1-litre bottle. With 10 years of maturation in bourbon casks, this is a great dram to drink with friends on summer evenings. (43%)
This 10-year-old Glenmorangie single malt whisky was bottled sometime in the 1990s and, therefore, probably distilled in the 1980s. We can indeed speak of an 'old skool' whisky. The label of this bourbon-matured dram also suggests this. (40%)
This is one of the core bottlings from Glenmorangie Highland Distillery. The distillery is the pioneer of 'finishing' (maturing the whisky at the end in a different type of cask), but this single malt matured for 10 years in the same bourbon casks. (40%)
This core bottling from Glenmorangie has been finished in PX and oloroso-sherry casks. This is reflected in notes like raisins, figs and chocolate biscuits. A beautiful, warm whisky for winter evenings, this 12-year-old Highlander. Bottled at 43%.
A good example of a successful finish in port casks, this Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban single malt whisky. Light and dark fruit, chocolate, cinnamon, pepper, and even sandalwood. With even more body than the 12-year-old version. (46%)
This is a 'single barley estate' Glenmorangie, distilled from barley from one farm: The Cadboll Estate. The single malt whisky matured for 15 years in select 'designer' bourbon casks. A silky, creamy dram with notes of honey, apricot and pear. 43%
This is an excellent whisky for after a festive dinner. The 16-year-old Glenmorangie single malt matured in bourbon casks and is finished in an exquisite selection of sweet wine casks (like Sauternes, Moscatel and Tokajer), and you can taste that! (46%)
'Finealta' is Gaelic for 'elegant', and this 2010 bottling from Glenmorangie certainly is! The single malt whisky matured in Oloroso sherry casks and American oak casks. Creamy and full in the mouth with fruity, wood, vanilla and sherry notes. (46%)
This 15-year-old Glenmorangie Fino Sherry Wood Finish was bottled a quarter of a century ago. This happened after the single malt whisky had been finished in fino sherry casks, which gave it extra flavours and aromas. An elegant, well-balanced dram. (43%)
We don't know precisely from when this Glenmorangie Sherry Wood Finish is, nor how long the single malt whisky did mature, but we do know that it is a fine example of the art of finishing that the Glenmorangie Distillery pioneered. (100 CL, 43%)
