Springbank is one of the 3 single malt whisky brands produced by the Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown (the smallest Scottish whisky region). The distillery is still the only one in Scotland to perform the entire production process, from malting the barley to bottling the whisky. The barley malt is dried at Springbank with Islay peat in 3 different time lengths. In the end, this produces 3 different types of spirit: a lightly peated, a medium-peated and a heavily peated whisky with the brand names of Hazelburn, Springbank and Longrow respectively.
Another interesting thing to know is that the spirit is distilled three times for Hazelburn, about 2.5 times for Springbank and twice for Longrow.
You see it more and more: single malt whisky distilled from barley from the region. The wine concept of 'terroir' plays an increasingly important role in whisky too. Springbank also has a Local Barley series. Matured for 11 years in bourbon casks. (53.1%)
A new bottling in the Springbank series Local Barley: it matured for 13 years in bourbon (80%) and sherry casks (20%) before being bottled at cask strength (54.1%). What makes this single malt whisky special is that it is distilled from local barley.
Springbank is one of the few really old-fashioned distilleries in Scotland. They have the entire process of whisky-making in their own hands. And then this is a 2015 bottling. So if you want to taste a 15-year-old really old-fashioned single malt? (46%)
Springbank single malt whiskey has always been quirky, with a recognizable profile. When it matures for 17 years in a mix of sherry casks, 1st-fill and refill butts and hogsheads, you get something special. Like this release, bottled in 2015 at 52.3%%.
If you like the whiskies from Springbank Distillery, as well as well-sherried drams, then this is a bottle you can't ignore! The Campbeltonian single malt whisky matured for 18 years in an active sherry cask. It was bottled by Glenscoma in 2013 at 45.1%.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Springbank Society, a celebratory bottling was released for members in 2014. It is a 14-year-old single malt whisky made from local barley and matured in a sherry cask. The members were very enthusiastic! (57.8%)
In 2016, Campbeltown distillery Springbank bottled for the Belgian The Nectar 342 bottles of their single malt whisky that had matured in an Oloroso cask for 21 years at a cask strength of 48.2%. A beautifully sherried, balanced, real Springbank.
The Springbank Distillery still produces whisky from barley to bottling, which is why the single malt whisky is appreciated by many. In 2016, Springbank released this 21-year-old, very high-scoring, sherried single-cask bottling. It is bottled at 47.5%.
This bottle is one of the first 500 bottles in the Whiskybase. This is also an exceptional bottle in other respects: it is a 32-year-old, sherried Springbank single malt whisky with a vintage year of 1971! And then it scores more than 91 points! (46%)
