The Benromach distillery was built in the Speyside at the height of the whisky boom at the end of the 19th century. The distillery was closed in 1983. In this period, Benromach actually only produced single malt whisky for blends. Ten years later, the distillery was saved from oblivion by independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail who bought Benromach and renovated it on a large scale. The package of the sale also included a warehouse with casks. This allowed G&M to launch special distillery bottlings before the first 'new' Benromach was bottled in 2004.
Benromach, by the way, is the smallest Speyside distillery: two men keep it going, including the manager.
