Yamazaki is the oldest distillery in Japan. Their whisky gets excellent reviews on average. Here's a new edition of one of their standard bottlings: the 12 Year Old Single Malt Japanese Whisky. It matured in Japanese oak casks, among others. (43%)
The Miyagikyo distillery of the Japanese Nikka not only makes grain whisky, but also single malt. Such as this ageless bottling, for which a special, aromatic yeast was used during production. Not complex, nutty, fruity and sweet and well-balanced. (47%)
Yoichi is one of the brands of the Japanese Nikka Whisky. Yoichi produces in a traditional way a highly regarded single malt whisky. For this bottling the distillery used a special, aromatic yeast. It's a not too complex, peaty dram. Bottled at 47%.
Fruity, floral notes, creamy in the mouth, vanilla, plum, apricot and a bit of grapefruit bitter. This Mars Komagatake Single Malt Japanese Whisky matured in bourbon and sherry casks, and you can taste that. Bottled in 2021 in a limited edition, at 48%.
Under the Nikka label the Nikka Whisky Distilling Co. releases special bottlings, like this Gold & Gold in the Samurai Bottle series. Why this series is so called will be obvious. It contains a blend of pot still whisky and a grain from the Coffey still.
The Chichibu Distillery just opened in 2004, but already almost every new edition of this single malt whisky is a collector's item. This also applies to this bottling from 2017. A very high-scoring young malt that matured in a sherry cask. (61.9%)
Miyagikyo is the name of the second distillery founded by Masataka Taketsuru, the father of the Japanese whisky industry. A distillery with its own kinds of single malt whisky, such as this Peated. A medium-smoky malt, sweet, malty and fruity. (48%)
A Japanese single malt whisky aged in bourbon casks in the warehouse of the Tsunuki Distillery, distilled by the Mars Distillery and released in the Komagatake series. A dram with notes of barley, vanilla and oak and a hint of smoke. (54%)
A 'World Blended Whisky' from the Japanese Chichibu distillery. In addition to Japanese, the blend contains Irish, Scottish, American and Canadian whiskies, brought together by Ichiro Akuro. Chichibu scores very high on average in the Whiskeybase. 46,5%
Fresh and exotic fruit, floral notes, creamy on the palate, vanilla honey and oak. This Mars Komagatake Single Malt Japanese Whisky matured in sherry casks and American white oak, and you can taste that. Bottled in 2020 in a limited edition, at 50%.
Named after the 'father' of the Japanese whisky industry, this whisky is a blend of single malts from the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries. Nicely balanced, pleasant to drink.
Curious about what the whisky from the new Japanese Kanosuke distillery will be like? Then you can certainly give this small bottle a try. The region in which the distillery is located is warm all year round, so the spirit matures faster. Bottled at 58%.
The Eigashima Shuzo distillery is there alreadyquite some time, but only since the beginning of this century they do distill whisky. Only in May and June, and under the name White Oak. This young single malt whisky matured in sherry casks. Bottled at 50%.
An early single malt bottling from Japanese distiller Eigashima Shuzo. The bottle does not mention age, but this must be a young whisky. Yet the taste palette is already nicely developed, and it has that modest, elegant Japanese character in the nose.

A beautiful Japanese blended whisky at cask strength (51.4%), this Nikka. The single malt and grain whiskies in this blend all come from the own Nikka distilleries. Good balance between malt, grain and cask and complex. A blend to come home with!
Has nothing to do with coffee, Coffey is the type of still with which this Japanese blended grain whisky is made. That resulted in a fruity, light, pleasantly drinkable dram, a whisky for those long summer evenings. Bottled at 45%.
Not very complex, but a broad and elegant taste palette. Some call this single malt whisky from the Japanese Miyagikyo distillery a 'summer whisky'. Subtle notes of fruit, sherry, wood and grain and a hint of smoke: a pleasantly drinkable dram.
