The Ross & Squibb Distillery in Indiana, which is little known outside America, has more than 175 years of experience in distilling bourbon and rye whiskey. That is certainly reflected in this Rossville Union Master Crafted straight rye whisky. (47%)
The idiosyncratic Reservoir Distillery (2008, Richmond, VA) not only distills bourbon, but also rye and wheat whisky. This is one of the latter. Like all their whiskies, this wheat whisky matured for at least 2 years in heavily charred casks. (50%)
About 170 years ago, Rebel Yell already made bourbon whiskey from corn and wheat. And as this bourbon was made at the time, it is still made at Lux Row Distillers today. This Small Batch Reserve is said to have matured extra long. Bottled at 45.3%.
Jack Daniel's of course is known worldwide as the Tennessee variety of bourbon whiskey. It is much less known that also rye whiskey is released under the Jack Daniel's brand. We have one here, bottled in 2018 for the German market. Try one? (45%)
Sazerac is a brand of rye whiskey from the Buffalo Trace Distillery (and it is the name of the family business that owns that distillery). This rye-based whisky is not complex, has its own character and body, and is pleasantly drinkable. (45%)
The extra rye in the Bulleit bourbon whiskey recipe gives it its own character. Matured for 10 years on charred new oak and bottled at 45.6%: this results in a bourbon with an excellent price / quality ratio.
The Knob Creek whiskeys are bottled at 100˚ proof (= 50% ABV). This also applies to this Knob Creek Rye whiskey. Yet the alcohol does not force itself. This is a mild rye whiskey with its own character. Also great for cocktails!
The Reservoir Distillery started in 2008 in Richmond, Virginia. The distillery wants to create its own tradition with distilling whisky. This Virginia Rye is an example of that. Made from 100% rye and matured in 'alligator charred' quarter casks. (50%)
This is a Texas single malt whisky from the young Balcones distillery, in Texas indeed. The powerful (62.9%) whisky was bottled in 2021 by Archives in their Venomous Snakes series. The whisky matured for only 3 years but is rich and full of flavour!
For those who want to try bourbon whiskey, or those who want to go deeper than the standard bourbon, we can recommend the Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select. Produced in the original way, in copper pot stills. And at a reasonable price.
