Blair Athol was built in Pitlochry (Highlands) at the end of the 18th century, making it one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Like many Scottish distilleries, Blair Athol experienced a series of closures and reopenings and owner changes. The distillery was completely rebuilt in 1949. In 1973 the number of stills doubled from 2 to 4. Now and then distillery bottlings appear on the market, but most of the bottlings of Blair Athol single malt whisky come from independent bottlers.
Blair Athol is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. In 2003, a 27-year-old bottling of the single malt whisky appeared in the Rare Malts Selection series. Creamy, dark fruit, marzipan, oak, flowers, and chocolate are just some of the keywords.
You can't go wrong with a bottle from Douglas Laing's Old Particular series, and that certainly applies to this 18-year-old, sherry-matured Blair Athol single malt whisky. Complex, with notes of dark fruit, plums, black wine gums and raisins. (48.4%)
Signatory Vintage releases, among other things, the 100 Proof series, known for its great price-quality ratio. Recently, there is also the Exceptional Cask - 100 Proof series. This 17-year-old, sherry-matured Blair Athol single malt is batch 12. (57.1%)
Blair Athol isn't the most famous single malt whisky, but that doesn't say anything about its quality. The distillery itself releases relatively few bottlings, so we have to rely on editions like this one, matured for 13 years in a Ruby Port cask. (57.5%)
