Blair Athol was built in Pitlochry (Highlands) at the end of the 18th century, making it one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Like many Scottish distilleries, Blair Athol experienced a series of closures and reopenings and owner changes. The distillery was completely rebuilt in 1949. In 1973 the number of stills doubled from 2 to 4. Now and then distillery bottlings appear on the market, but most of the bottlings of Blair Athol single malt whisky come from independent bottlers.
Blair Athol is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. In 2003, a 27-year-old bottling of the single malt whisky appeared in the Rare Malts Selection series. Creamy, dark fruit, marzipan, oak, flowers, and chocolate are just some of the keywords.
A whole range of 28-year-old single malt whiskies can be found in the 2016 series The Birds from Antique Lions of Spirits. This Blair Athol is one of them. Matured in a bourbon cask and bottled at 51.2% ABV. Oily, caramel, nuts, wood, and a touch of soap.
You can't go wrong with a bottle from Douglas Laing's Old Particular series, and that certainly applies to this 18-year-old, sherry-matured Blair Athol single malt whisky. Complex, with notes of dark fruit, plums, black wine gums and raisins. (48.4%)
With the Crafted in Cask bottlings, Berry Bros & Rudd aims to enrich the whisky with additional notes in harmony with the distillery's character. They achieved this again with this 12-year-old Blair Athol by finishing it in a Margaux wine cask. (58.2%)
This Blair Athol single malt whisky matured for 12 years, including a finish in a Pomerol wine cask, before being bottled by Berry Bros & Rudd at 57.3% cask strength. A rich, full-bodied, and spicy dram with notes of red fruit, plums, and dark chocolate.
