Laphroaig is undoubtedly the best known single malt whisky distillery on Islay, the Scottish island known for its peated, smoky whiskies. The Laphroaig Distillery was founded in 1815. Over the years, Laphroaig has released many distillery bottlings, and many independent Laphroaig bottles have also been released. Some bottlings received very high ratings.
Laphroaig is one of the few distilleries that still has its own malting floor. The malt is dried over a fire there, fired with peat from their own peat fields. Nowadays, this home-made malt only accounts for 10% of all malt used by Laphroaig.
For many, Laphroaig whisky is the first introduction to 'smoky' single malt whisky.

Another stellar release in the Symington's Choice range. Laphroaig 1997 matured for over 25 years. Smoky, fat, medicinal and powerful. No subtle whisky here. The whisky aged in a bourbon hogshead, even though the colour would suggest a sherry influence.
This is the 2021 edition of a 25 year old Laphroaig single malt whisky at cask strength. These bottlings of the firmly peated Islay malt always score very well. Due to their age, the smoky character is somewhat milder. Matured in bourbon casks and at 51.9

The smaller the casks, the greater the influence of the wood. That is certainly the case with this Laphroaig which has been finished on small quarter casks. This yields a nice, full and complex dram, with the famous 'smoke and peat' from Laphroaig.
