Once the Lowlands in the south of Scotland were full of distilleries, totaling more than 250. They often worked according to the triple-distillation process. At the end of the 19th century, many distilleries switched to the production of cheap, bad alcohol. This gave Lowland whisky a bad name. Many distillers disappeared or switched to grain whisky. Now there are not many distilleries left, and only one still produces according to the triple-distillation process.
Glenkinchie represents the Lowlands in Diageo’s Classic Malts series, but otherwise we don’t see many bottlings of this single malt. Yet here is one: an 18-year-old, bourbon-matured bottling in Douglas Laing’s Old Particular series. Bottled at 48.4%.
This Secret Lowland single malt was released as part of Douglas Laing's 'Old Particular: Fanatical About Flavour' collection. This 13-year-old Lowlander was finished in an orange wine cask and bottled at a cask strength of 52.1%. Expect orange notes.
Yet another Chairman’s Choice in Douglas Laing’s renowned Old Particular series! It is a 20-year-old Strathclyde. This Lowlands single grain whisky matured in a Pedro Ximénez sherry cask, yielding 72 bottles at the series' signature strength of 48.4%.
Daftmill is a 'single farm estate' single malt whisky. Everything, from growing the barley to bottling the whisky, takes place at the Daftmill farm. This 13-year-old Summer Batch Release matured in first-fill bourbon casks and was bottled in 2026. (46%)
Many whisky enthusiasts look forward to new releases of Daftmill single malt. And here is another one! This 15-year-old single-farm estate whisky, with vintages 2010 and 2011, matured in two first-fill bourbon casks and was bottled at 56.3% cask strength.
The production of whisky by Lindores Abbey in the Scottish Lowlands is first recorded in 1494. More than five centuries later, this Lindores Abbey single malt whisky—matured in bourbon, sherry, and re-charred wine casks—makes its appearance. (46% ABV)
30 years ago, Cadenhead released this 26-year-old Dumbarton single malt whisky. Single malt? Indeed—Dumbarton was a grain distillery, but the Inverleven malt distillery also stood on the site until 1991. Dumbarton itself closed its doors in 2002. (49.5%)
The Carsebridge grain distillery closed in 1993 and is partially demolished. Yet, very occasionally, a single grain bottling from the distillery is still released—like this one from Living Souls! The whisky matured for 50 years in a bourbon cask! (56.3%)
James MacArthur was one of the first modern independent bottlers. In total, they released nearly 850 bottlings, and this is a bottle from 1991 of their Fine Grain Selection: a 28-year-old Carsebridge single grain whisky, bottled at 54.7% ABV.
You can also come across 'old school' whisky in the single grain sector. That is certainly the case with this North British. After 25 years in bourbon casks, it was bottled in 1990 by Signatory Vintage, in their early days, in those dumpy bottles. (46%)
Auchentoshan's single malt whisky is always triple distilled. This therefore also applies to this Vivid and Indulgent bottling from 2021. The Lowlander matured for 18 years in bourbon and sherry casks and is bottled at 43% ABV. A soft, creamy dram.
This bottling of Lowland single malt Auchentoshan is a prime example of the excellent value for money of the Un-Chillfiltered Collection from Signatory Vintage. The 13-year-old, triple-distilled malt is finished in 1st-fill Amontillado casks. (46% ABV)
In 2009, this Cameronbridge single grain whisky appeared in bottler Duncan Taylor's classic Rare Auld series. The Lowland grain (vintage 1978) had matured in a bourbon cask for 30 years and was bottled in 271 bottles at 54.3% cask strength.
North British grain distillery was founded near Edinburgh 150 years ago to supply grain whisky to the blending industry. There are however also single grain bottlings from this brand. Like this one by Thompson Bros, 17-year-old, aged in sherry casks. 48%
Holyrood Distillery, founded in 2019, produces single malt whisky based on various old Edinburgh brewing and distillery recipes. As a result, just about every bottling has its own style. This Pitch matured in oloroso casks and is bottled at 49.4% ABV.
Bottler Cadenhead released this Littlemill bottling in 2019, in a limited edition of 270 bottles, after the Lowland single malt had matured for 27 years in a bourbon hogshead. It is bottled at 49.8% and scores almost 89 points on Whiskybase.
You don't come across many new Littlemill bottlings these days. But older bottlings like this one from Malts of Scotland are worth mentioning. The Littlemill single malt matured in a sherry cask for over 25 years, from 1988 to 2013. (52.1% ABV)
Malts of Scotland bottled this highly regarded Littlemill single malt in 2015 specifically for a German flying club. The whisky from the Lowland distillery, which closed in 1996, matured for about 25 years in a bourbon cask and was bottled at 50.2% ABV.
'Rare Ayrshire' says the label, and that is absolutely correct! It is a bottling of single malt whisky from the long-closed Ladyburn Distillery in Ayrshire, Scotland. The spirit went into the cask in 1974 to emerge 36 years later as single malt! (46%)
The Bonnington Distillery in Edinburgh, which opened in 2020, expects to distil around 4,200 casks of whisky annually. These casks will then be used to produce bottlings like this Oloroso-aged single malt. Caramel, dried fruit, nutmeg, and sultanas. (47%)
This 13-year-old, Oloroso-matured blended malt from Thompson Bros. contains single malt whisky from the Ailsa Bay distillery, a whisky you don't often encounter. We don't know which other malt or malts are in this blend, or how much. (55.3% cask strength)
This is the third release in the Ploughing Edition from Lowlands distillery Lochlea. The single malt whisky matured in casks previously used to mature Islay whisky. This gives the whisky a delicate smoky note, alongside fruity and floral notes. (46% ABV)
Farm-distillery Lochlea has released Batch 3 of their Cask Strength series. The single malt whisky matured in Oloroso sherry casks and casks previously containing peated Islay malt. A beautiful combination of sherry influences and peat smoke notes. 59.8%
