A distillery bottling is a bottling by the whisky distillery itself. We also call this 'original brand' bottling or OB. Until the 1970s, there were only 12 distillers in Scotland who released original brands. The whisky from the other distillers that did not disappear into the blends was bottled by independent bottlers.
Almost all distillers now have their own bottlings. This can be standard bottlings that always come in standard quality, or special bottlings in a limited edition. Sometimes even single-cask releases are involved.
But in addition to the OB's, there still appear independent bottlings (IB) from all distilleries.
A good all-rounder, this Paul John Edited single malt whisky. Smoky notes combine well with notes of fruit and herbs, but vanilla, cocoa and cereals play a role too. This bottling is not very complex and is therefore pleasantly drinkable.
The Writer's Tears bottlings pay homage to 19th century Irish whiskey. That certainly also applies to this edition of the Walsh Whiskey distillery. It is a genuine Irish triple-distilled single pot still whiskey. Matured in various cask types. (46%)
The Arran Distillery nowadays also does 'finishing'. Take, for example, this 'ageless' single malt whisky that is finished in sauternes wine casks. You can taste the wine influence in fruity notes such as apricot and pear, with a hint of nutmeg. At 50%.
For those who want to try bourbon whiskey, or those who want to go deeper than the standard bourbon, we can recommend the Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select. Produced in the original way, in copper pot stills. And at a reasonable price.
This bottling is the successful result of a collaboration between the Teeling Whiskey Company and the Belgian brewery Duvel Moortgat. The Irish blended whisky matured in Belgian beer casks, resulting in a drinkable, smooth whisky, that is bottled at 46%.
The Teeling Distillery sometimes collaborates with others to release special whiskies. This happens, for example, in the Small Batch Collaboration series. In this edition Teeling collaborated with DOT Brew. The blend is finished in porter beer casks. 46%
An Irish whiskey with a Caribbean edge, this Tullamore dew XO. For a very reasonable price you get a nice drinkable and smooth whiskey with sweet, tropical notes from the rum casks on which it was finished. A whiskey for a summer evening.
It's not the first 10-Year-Old Ardnamurchan bottling, but it is the first to be released as a core bottling from the young Highland distillery. The mildly peated single malt whisky matured for 95% in bourbon casks and for 5% in sherry casks. (46.8%)
You don't often see whisky finished on Malaga casks, and certainly not Irish whisky. That makes this 14-year-old Bushmills single malt quite special. First, it matured in bourbon casks (1st fill + 2nf fill), and then for a year in Malaga casks. (40%)
With this Writer's Tears Double Oak that is produced by the Irish Midleton Distillery you get a dram that is a blend of pot still and single malt whisky. This not so common blend matured in both American and French oak casks and is bottled at 46%.
This Writer's Tears Limited Edition, an Irish single malt whisky, was finished in a high quality Marsala cask. And you can taste that: deep, warm and earthy notes, dried fruit, candied ginger, apple and spices. To enjoy on winter evenings. Bottled at 45%.
A new Ardnamurchan Cask Strength Release, from 2025. This edition is distilled from peated and unpeated barley malt, and the West Highland single malt whisky matured in bourbon and sherry casks. It is bottled at a cask strength of 57.7% ABV.
With their Writer's Tears single malt whisky, the Walsh Whiskey Distillery pays homage to the 19th century Irish whiskey. The whisky in the Red Head series matured in Oloroso sherry casks. A warm, uncomplicated dram at a fair price. Bottled at 46%.
With a bit of goodwill, you could call Lindores the oldest Scotch whisky brand, but it's only after centuries that Lindores single malt whisky was released again, since 2021. This Friar John Cor - Chapter III matured in bourbon and sherry casks. (60.2%)
This is the third release in the Ploughing Edition from Lowlands distillery Lochlea. The single malt whisky matured in casks previously used to mature Islay whisky. This gives the whisky a delicate smoky note, alongside fruity and floral notes. (46% ABV)
In 2018, the first new make spirit came from the stills of Lochlea, a farm converted into a distillery in the Lowlands. Now, several dozen bottlings later, there is this 4-year-old exclusive single cask bottling, matured in a sherry cask. (60.3%)

A unique encounter between two blended whiskies from the Japanese brand Ichiro: one with a Dutch Delftware scene on the label, the other with a Japanese temple; both matured in a bourbon cask, one of which was an ex-peated one. Unique! (61.8% and 60.8%)
