Single malt whisky is a mixture of malt whisky from casks of the same distillery. Malt whisky is made from barley malt and distilled in pot stills, and has matured for at least 3 years in oak barrels. This whisky usually has a for the distillery characteristic flavor. A special bottling from Highland distillery Deanston. The special thing is the finish: the single malt whisky has matured for a while in casks in which red burgundy previously matured. That gives this 10-year-old malt extra fruity notes. At 46.3% ABV.
Here's another special edition from Highland-distillery Deanston. They previously released 15-year-old bottlings that were finished in Marsala or Sauternes casks; here the single malt whisky was finished in Tequila casks. And that is quite special! 52.5%
This bottle is from an Archives bottling, especially for the USA. Bottled in 2019 in 270 bottles at 750ml, the Deanston single malt whisky matured for 21 years in a bourbon cask. As usual with Archives bottlings, the Highlander is at cask strength (52.7%)
There are relatively few third-party bottlings of Deanston single malt whisky. But here's one of them: a 9 year old edition by Torsten Paul Whisky Company. The Deanston is finished on an ex-Islay ex-oloroso octave cask. Quite special! (74 bottles at 52.3%
This Deanston bottling beautifully blends the fresh, fruity distillery profile with the influence of the premium bourbon cask in which the single malt matured for 8 years. Besides the fruit, there are notes of butter, grain, spice, and minerality. (53%)
Matured in virgin oak casks, this timeless Deanston, but with not too much of the sharpness that new oak brings to whisky. This is a light, not very complex malt with notes of vanilla, honey, spices, fresh sawdust. At 46.3%.
