The Arran Distillery nowadays also does 'finishing'. Take, for example, this 'ageless' single malt whisky that is finished in sauternes wine casks. You can taste the wine influence in fruity notes such as apricot and pear, with a hint of nutmeg. At 50%.
Speyside distillery Glenfarclas is known for its bottlings that matured on sherry casks. A good example is this 12 year old with its full taste and notes of light and dark fruit and sherry. It is therefore one of the core bottlings of Glenfarclas. (43%)
Gordon & MacPhail release bottling series in various categories. The Distillery Labels series, in which this 25-year-old, sherried Linkwood single malt whisky is released, is extra special because it matured in their own, carefully selected G&M casks.
The well-known 10-year-old standard bottling from the Talisker Distillery on the Isle of Skye has been given a new look. Label and box express the maritime character of this malt, which further stands out with notes like sweet smoke, peat and pepper.
On the occasion of the Feis Isle 2021, bottler Douglas Laing released another Big Peat, the Peatrichor. Like the other Big Peat bottlings, this one is a surprising and tantalizing blend of peated Islay malt whiskies in a release of5190 bottles at 53.8%.
Douglas Laing is known for its blended malt whiskies. Their motto is: 'If a single malt is a violin, then a blended malt is an entire orchestra!'. Well-known are, for example, their Big Peat-blended Islay malts. This is also included in this tasting kit.
Why bottler Douglas Laing labels this Big Peat edition with the German word for Father's Day is not known to us, but that Father will be happy with this blend of Islay single malt whiskies (Caol Ila, Bowmore, Ardbeg and even Port Ellen), is for sure! 48%
With their Writer's Tears single malt whisky, the Walsh Whiskey Distillery pays homage to the 19th century Irish whiskey. The whisky in the Red Head series matured in Oloroso sherry casks. A warm, uncomplicated dram at a fair price. Bottled at 46%.
A South African single malt whisky, we don't have that often in the shop! The Three Ships whisky comes from the James Sedgewick Distillery. And this 12 year old edition is the first bottling in the Master Distiller's Private Collection series. At 46.3%.
This is a Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey, traditionally distilled according to an original recipe, carbon-filtered for a smooth, mild character and bottled at 99 proof (49.5%). Slightly different from the well-known standard bourbons. Curious?
This Kasei blended whisky is bottled by the Japanese Hombo Mars for the French La Maison du Whisky. Malt and grain whisky are brought together here in the smooth Mars style: floral, fruity notes and honey, with a hint of smoke. Bottled at 40%.
Lowlands distillery Bladnoch has a rich history of closings and changes of ownership. In 2015 Bladnoch made a fresh start with their single malt whisky in newly designed bottles. Like this Vinaya that matured in bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks. (46.7%)
Another very interesting bottling from 2020 from the Campbeltown distillery Springbank. This 10-year-old Springbank single malt is distilled from barley from the immediate area. It matured in Oloroso sherry casks and is bottled at 55.6% cask strength.
The subtitle Carribean Reserve says it all: this The Glenlivet single malt whisky was finished in barrels in which rum was previously aged. And that gives extra notes to the well-known Speyside single malt. And that for a reasonable price. At 40%.
The Bunnahabhain Distillery on whisky island Islay mainly produces non-peated single malt whisky, but they make also smoky drams. Take the Toiteach a Dhà (Gaelic for 'Smoky Two'), for example: matured in bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks. Bottled at 46.3%.
Rowan's Creek is a brand of straight Kentucky bourbon whisky and one of the many brands that is produced by Kentucky Bourbon Distillers . This is a small-batch bourbon, traditionally distilled and bottled by hand from newly charred oak barrels. 50.05%
A true classic in the world of sherried single malt whisky, the Aberlour A'bunadh. This is the 69th batch already. Matured in oloroso-sherry casks and at a cask strength of 61.2%, this is a nice, warm whisky for the cold winter days.
The Woodford Reserve Distillery is in the heart of bourbon country and produces its whisky from copper pot stills. In addition to bourbon, Woodford also makes Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey. A pleasantly drinkable, mild rye whisky for a good price. (45,2%)
Jack Daniel's of course is known worldwide as the Tennessee variety of bourbon whiskey. It is much less known that also rye whiskey is released under the Jack Daniel's brand. We have one here, bottled in 2018 for the German market. Try one? (45%)
When you say Macallan, you say sherried whiskey. The distillery, which opened in Speyside in 1824, still mainly produces single malt whisky matured in sherry casks. Take this 12 year old edition: buttery, sweet, dark red fruit, tobacco...a pleasant dram.
Due to the Indian climate, the single malt whisky from Bangalore-based Amrut Distillery matures quickly. The mostly young malts therefore have a mature character. And bottled at cask strength, the whisky has a hefty percentage, like this one: 61.8%.
Family-owned distillery Glenfarclas is known for its sherried single malt whisky. One of their standard bottlings is the 17 year old malt. This is the 2020 edition, matured in oloroso sherry casks. A mature sherried dram for a reasonable price! (43%)
The 2020 edition of the Glenlivet French Oak Reserve. For this bottling, some of the spirit matured in Limousin oak casks. This resulted in a single malt whisky that, in addition to the fruitiness of Glenlivet, also has notes of vanilla and wood. (40%)
