With this Perspective No. 01, the Isle of Jura distillery team returns to an old favourite: Diurachs' Own, a distillery classic. This Perspective is a 16-year-old, bourbon-aged single malt whisky, (partially) finished in Oloroso casks. (46.5% ABV)
A blend of two Islay single malts: the peated Caol Ila and the normally unpeated Bunnahabhain. The whisky matured in heavily charred sherry casks of American and European oak. This resulted in a well-balanced flavour profile. Bottled at 54.5% ABV.
A blended malt whisky in the Elements of Islay series by Elixir Distillers. The label does not specify which Islay malts are included, but does state that the whisky matured in new oak, bourbon, and sherry casks. A varied and smoky flavour profile. 54.5%
Decadent Drinks wants to celebrate the fierce spirit of the Highlands with modern, vibrant single malts in the Teuchter series. For example, with this 10-year-old, bourbon-matured, exemplary Ben Nevis. Waxy, with a varied taste and aroma palette. (47.0% )
The 15 is not a standard bottling from Islay distillery Laphroaig. But it is clearly a Laphroaig single malt whisky with its medicinal and smoky notes, with fruity menthol, saline notes, pear, and apple. Pleasantly complex. Bottled at 46%.
This bottling is in honour of the Tartan Army, the kilt-clad supporters of Scotland's national football team. It is a Ben Nevis single malt, a Scottish classic, that matured for 11 years in carefully selected sherry casks. At a great price. (46%)
The label tells you exactly what to expect from this Glens Scotia: Tropical Fruit & Coastal Spray. The classic Campbeltown single malt matured for 12 years in first-fill bourbon casks. For a great price, you get a very drinkable whisky. (46%)
This is the first time Ardnamurchan has matured its (unpeated) spirit in casks that previously held sweet Hungarian Tokaji wine. This resulted in a balanced single malt whisky with notes of orchard fruit, banana, almonds, and grains. (8y, 52.0% ABV)
Bottler Living Souls, founded in Glasgow in 2010, has released over forty bottlings to date. This is one of the latest: a Bowmore single malt whisky that matured in a bourbon cask for 22 years and is bottled at 52.0%. With a score of over 89 points.
The Ardmore Distillery was built in the late 19th century to supply single malt for Teacher's Highland Cream. By now, Ardmore has become a well-known and appreciated brand in its own right. This Maltbarn bottling aged for 23 years in a bourbon cask. 50.5%
If you like well-sherried whisky at a robust strength, then you can't go wrong with this Aberlour bottling from Signatory Vintage, price-wise as well! The Speyside single malt matured for 14 years in a 1st-fill Oloroso cask and is bottled at 61.9% ABV!
This 13-year-old Auchroisk single malt whisky was released in Douglas Laing's Dutch Dram Masters series. The special feature of this bottling is that the Speysider was finished in an ice wine cask (ice wine: dessert wine made from frozen grapes). 55.4%
This Dalmunach had the honour of being bottled under the Planet Earth label of Maltbarn's Planets series. The Dalmunach distillery stands (since 2015) where the Imperial Distillery previously stood. This edition aged for 9 years in a bourbon cask. (56.3%)
In their long-named bottling series, James Eadie releases affordable whiskies from Scottish and Irish distilleries. This is a Linkwood, a single malt from the Speyside, Scotland. It matured for 14 years in a re-charred bourbon cask. (52.4% ABV)
A 35-year-old Burnside (or let's say Balvenie, with at most a teaspoon of Glefiddich)! You don't see those often, but here is one: it is a bottling from the German Spheric Spirits of a Burnside, vintage 1989, bourbon-aged and bottled at 52% ABV.
The French bottler Le Gus't is releasing a special bottling of a single malt from the Glasgow Distillery, founded in 2012. The whisky matured for 9 years in a Vin de Paille wine cask. Rich in flavour: dried fruit, dates, nuts, and more. (57.9% ABV)
Balmenach is not the best-known single malt distillery (most of its whisky ends up in blends), but the single-malt bottlings it releases often receive high ratings. That will likely be the case with this 24-year-old, sherry-aged bottling as well. (52.4%)
Campbeltown distillery Glengyle released the 14th batch in the Heavily Peated-Small Batch series of its Kilkerran single malt whisky. The peated dram matured in both bourbon and sherry casks. The hefty 58.3% alcohol is nicely integrated.
Tullibardine, founded in 1949, has operated at full capacity as a single malt producer only since 2008. From that year onwards, they also focused more on finishing whisky. This 32-year-old bottling matured in 'bourbon & madeira' casks. Finishing? (47.1%)
You don't often come across a blended grain whisky. And certainly not one like this Hedonism from Compass Box. The three grains Cameronbridge, Girvan and Port Dundas together form a creamy, soft blend, very pleasant to drink. (43%)
However original the label may be, once in the glass, the contents of the bottle will command all the attention! It is a 22-year-old Glen Grant single malt that matured first in a bourbon cask and the last 3 years in a first-fill sherry cask. (52.0% ABV)
Naturally, Laphroaig cannot be missing from James Eadie's Distilleries of Great Britain & Ireland Commemorative series. The bottler has released an edition of the peated Islay single malt whisky that matured for 10 years in refill bourbon casks. (52.3%)
Most of the single malt from the 130-year-old Aultmore Distillery can be found in Dewar's blended whisky, but single malt bottlings occasionally appear, such as this one from Le Gus't. The Speysider matured for 15 years in a bourbon barrel. (57.1% ABV)
