The basic raw material for this whiskey is of course rye, possibly with other grains. Rye whiskey is mainly produced in the USA and Canada. The rules for maturing and permitted additives differ per production area.
Amrut Distillery states in the subtitle on the label that this is a single malt whisky, but it is called Rye. And that is what it is: an Indian whisky in American style distilled from European rye! It is matured in new American oak casks. Curious? (50%)
The '95' on the label of this Bulleit rye whiskey stands for the percentage of rye in the mash. And that is a lot. If you want to know what a real rye whiskey tastes like, then this American Bulleit is a good example. And that for a reasonable price!
The Elijah Craig brand is known for its bourbons, but here is their first Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey, distilled from spicy rye and corn. A soft, smooth whisky with notes such as dark chocolate, honey, baking spices and oak, with a hint of smoke. (47%)
The Ezra Brooks Straight Rye Whiskey is, as we know, the first rye whisky from this brand. Most rye whisky, with its specific character, comes from the US and Canada. Just like this one. Matured in new American oak, bottled at 45%.
This is a very special rye whiskey from FEW Spirits in Illinois. The traditionally distilled whisky matured for 2 years in charred virgin American oak barrels and was diluted to 46.5% with Oolong tea, with notes such as honey, dragon fruit and peach.
This rye whiskey from the FEW Spirits distillery in Illinois, USA, is produced according to traditional methods. That produces a rye whiskey with fruity, sweet-spicy notes, the smell of rye bread and some pepper and pine in the taste. A real rye!
The East Flemish distillery Filliers has been active for two centuries now. Since 2007, they also produce whisky, under the Filliers brand since 2019. In 2023, the distillery released this 5-year-old rye whisky, matured in virgin American oak casks. 46.5%
This bottling from Graanstokerij Filliers in Belgium is a typical rye whisky, characterised by notes of rhubarb, anise, orange, a hint of resin, and green herbs. The whisky matured for 8 years in virgin American oak barrels and is bottled at 46.5% ABV.
This is no 'normal' rye whiskey that the High West Distillery releases, this is a blend of straight rye whiskeys. And you don't see that often! You really can taste from this bottling that High West was awarded as best distillery in America in 2016. (46%)
Jack Daniel's of course is known worldwide as the Tennessee variety of bourbon whiskey. It is much less known that also rye whiskey is released under the Jack Daniel's brand. We have one here, bottled in 2018 for the German market. Try one? (45%)
Daddy Rack in Tennessee distils a whisky related to bourbon. But Daddy now has a son, Jimmy Rack, and that is a Tennessee Straight Rye Whiskey. Distilled from 95% rye and 5% barley malt, aged in charred oak casks and maple charcoal filtered. (3y, 61.15%)
The Knob Creek whiskeys are bottled at 100˚ proof (= 50% ABV). This also applies to this Knob Creek Rye whiskey. Yet the alcohol does not force itself. This is a mild rye whiskey with its own character. Also great for cocktails!

This Old Ezra 7 Kentucky straight rye whiskey, a sub-brand of Ezra Brooks, is produced in Indiana for Luxco in Kentucky. The rye whiskey matured for 7 years in charred casks, which is reflected in the nose. Oily, vanilla, rye malt and honey. (50.5%)
At the modern Lux Row Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky, they distil whiskey according to various recipes for various brands. This 7-year-old Old Ezra is a prime example: a straight rye whiskey that matured in a charred American oak cask. (57.0% ABV)
The Reservoir Distillery started in 2008 in Richmond, Virginia. The distillery wants to create its own tradition with distilling whisky. This Virginia Rye is an example of that. Made from 100% rye and matured in 'alligator charred' quarter casks. (50%)
Rossville Union is the brand under which the Ross & Squibb Distillery in Indiana, US, releases rye whisky. They do this according to a traditional recipe and process. This Master Crafted edition is 5 years old and aged in freshly charred oak casks. (47%)
The Ross & Squibb Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, produces rye whisky in addition to bourbon. This Rossville Union is an excellent example of that. Traditionally produced, it aged for 7 years in charred American oak casks, and bottled at 58.5%.
The Ross & Squibb Distillery in Indiana, which is little known outside America, has more than 175 years of experience in distilling bourbon and rye whiskey. That is certainly reflected in this Rossville Union Master Crafted straight rye whisky. (47%)
Sazerac is a brand of rye whiskey from the Buffalo Trace Distillery (and it is the name of the family business that owns that distillery). This rye-based whisky is not complex, has its own character and body, and is pleasantly drinkable. (45%)
Rye whisky mainly comes from the US and Canada. However, this is a 'single rye' whisky from the Danish Stauning, finished in a Moscatel cask and bottled at cask strength by Berry Bros & Rudd. At 4 years old, a young whisky, but with a mature taste palette
We didn't have many bottlings of the traditionally distilled Templeton Rye Whiskey in the shop so far. And we probably even didn't have a rye whiskey finished in stout beer casks here before. This is one of those bottlings that makes one curious! (46%)
The WhistlePig Distillery in Vermont, USA, makes artisanal straight rye whiskey. This rye whiskey from the Old World Rye series is 12 years old. It was finished in madeira, sauternes and port wine casks, so wine casks from the Old World. Bottled at 43%.
The Woodford Reserve Distillery is in the heart of bourbon country and produces its whisky from copper pot stills. In addition to bourbon, Woodford also makes Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey. A pleasantly drinkable, mild rye whisky for a good price. (45,2%)
