A distillery bottling is a bottling by the whisky distillery itself. We also call this 'original brand' bottling or OB. Until the 1970s, there were only 12 distillers in Scotland who released original brands. The whisky from the other distillers that did not disappear into the blends was bottled by independent bottlers.
Almost all distillers now have their own bottlings. This can be standard bottlings that always come in standard quality, or special bottlings in a limited edition. Sometimes even single-cask releases are involved.
But in addition to the OB's, there still appear independent bottlings (IB) from all distilleries.
Meikle Tòir, Glenallachie's new peated single malt whisky line, has three standard series. The Sherry One is one of them. In addition to bourbon casks, the Speysider also matured in PX and Oloroso casks: cigars, butterscotch, mocha, figs, and more. 48%
Yellow Spot is an Irish single pot-still whiskey. It is distilled from malted and unmalted barley. This Yellow Spot matured for 12 years in 3 types of cask: bourbon, sherry and malaga. That results in a sweet, fruity, smooth and silky dram with body.
This Clonakilty Port Cask Finish is a single-cask bottling specially for the Dutch market. The Irish single-pot still whisky from the Scully family farm distillery has been finished in a port cask and bottled in 914 bottles at 53.0%.
Scapa is the lesser-known of the two Orkney single malt whiskies, and this is a good bottling to get acquainted with it. The whisky matured for 10 years in a small number of bourbon casks and is bottled at 48% ABV. For a reasonable price, it can be yours!
Campbeltown distillery Glengyle released the 14th batch in the Heavily Peated-Small Batch series of its Kilkerran single malt whisky. The peated dram matured in both bourbon and sherry casks. The hefty 58.3% alcohol is nicely integrated.
This is a blend of carefully selected Japanese whiskies, the youngest of which is no less than 21 years old! These are Yamazaki and Hakushu single malt and Chita grain whisky that are blended in Japanese oak casks. (bottled at 43%)
The subtle smoke that characterizes Benromach single malt whisky and the influence of both the bourbon and sherry casks on which it matured provide a rich palette of notes. The maturation period of 21 years certainly plays a role in this. Bottled at 43%.
The Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery, founded in 2011, releases single malt whisky under the Filey Bay label. This Filey Bay was bottled in 2023 after maturing in bourbon casks and being finished in Moscatel casks. Pleasant to drink. (46% ABV)
This Bowmore was hand-filled in 2017 by a visitor to the distillery in Bowmore, the capital of Islay. It is a single malt that matured for 17 years in a first-fill sherry cask. An oily sherry bomb with maritime notes and mild peat smoke. (56.9% ABV)
This pot-still whisky is distilled by the young Japanese Hioki Distillery, owned by family of the owners of the nearby Kanusoke single malt distillery. The pot-still whisky is made from 90% unmalted barley and only 10% malted barley. Remarkable! (51%)
As the label indicates, this Dutch Single Malt Whisky from the Zuidam distillery matured for 10 years in Oloroso sherry casks. In 2019, Zuidam won gold with an Oloroso-matured malt at the Wizards of Whisky Awards. This bottling is no less! (46%)
A South African single malt whisky, we don't have that often in the shop! The Three Ships whisky comes from the James Sedgewick Distillery. And this 12 year old edition is the first bottling in the Master Distiller's Private Collection series. At 46.3%.
This Ardnamurchan was bottled in 2025 for a Dutch whisky enthusiasts' club in a limited edition of 334 bottles. This West Highland single malt whisky matured for 10 years in an ex-Oloroso Spanish oak cask. A beautifully sherried, oily dram. (58.6%)
Only 294 bottles of this superb Springbank were released in 2019. The Campbeltown single malt whisky matured for 24 years in a perfect sherry cask before being bottled at 46.2%. Subtle, complex, beautifully balanced, and with a grand mouthfeel. Score 90.9
This is an Arran single malt from a 2013 single-cask bottling. The whisky from the island of Arran matured for over 15 years in a select sherry cask and is bottled at 56.5%. Creamy. An explosion of fruity flavours, a hint of pepper, chocolate and toffee.
If you are looking for an affordable, heavily sherried single malt whisky in which you can clearly taste the distillery's character, then this 12-year-old standard Glenallachie is the right choice for you. It aged in Oloroso and PX casks. (new label, 46%)
A new label design adorns this Ballechin bottling. Ballechin is the heavily peated version of Edradour's single malt whisky. This Ballechin is released in the Cask Strength Edition series. It is 13 years old and matured in bourbon and sherry casks. 54.9%
This 25-year-old Glenfarclas single malt was the 140th whisky to be registered in the Whiskybase (there are now almost 300,000). A classic sherry-aged Glenfarclas, in which the Speyside character is clearly recognisable alongside the sherry influence. 43%
The Aberlour Distillery is best known for its sherried whisky. This bottling proves that this is justly so. The 18-year-old single malt whisky matured in casks of both American and European oak and is finished in PX and Oloroso casks. (43% ABV)
The smallest classic Highland distillery, Edradour, released a limited edition 10-year-old bottling of its single malt whisky here, fully matured in 1st-fill Sauternes casks. The casks come from a famous Bordeaux winery. A perfect spirit-cask balance. 46%
This The Classic Laddie, a single malt whisky bottling from the unique Islay distillery Bruichladdich, is the first in this series with an age statement: 10 years. The spirit is distilled from Scottish barley, and the whisky is bottled at 50% ABV.
This 21-year-old Springbank single malt whisky is one of the core bottlings of the quirky Campbeltown distillery. But it is by no means a standard dram! It matured in sherry, bourbon, rum, and port casks! Attention: this is a limited edition! (46%)
In 2019, the first spirit flowed from the specially designed copper stills of the Irish Boann Distillery. From 2024, the distillery released single malt and single pot still whisky, but you could already taste their new-make spirit before that. (63%)
An new edition edition by the Arran distillery of their peated single malt whisky Machrie Moor. This whisky, which is bottled at 46%, is not too heavily peated and therefore remains a pleasantly drinkable dram, with the Arran profile clearly recognizable.
