Islay belongs to the Inner Hebrides in Scotland. The island lies between the Isle of Jura and Northern Ireland. From Ireland, the whisky once crossed over to Islay and thus entered Scotland. The most important place is Bowmore. Other places of interest are Port Ellen and Port Charlotte. The population is just over 3000. With its 8 distilleries, 6 of which produce a smoky whisky, Islay is formally a separate whisky region. It is therefore also known as the Whisky Island.
According to some, this Smokehead Islay single malt whisky is young Caol Ila finished in Ardbeg casks. Perhaps. In any case, this is a beautiful, uncomplicated and pleasantly drinkable dram for the smoky whisky lover. At 40%.
This is another exceptional Symington's Choice from bottler Signatory Vintage: a Laphroaig single malt that matured for 25 years in an Oloroso sherry cask. A powerful, complex and perfectly balanced whisky, still quite smoky despite its age. (54.5% ABV)
The classic Islay malt Caol Ila was subject in an experiment with two sherry casks for this bottling, a first-fill and a refill. This resulted in a delicious, rich, and almost creamy single malt with intense peat smoke and maritime notes. (57.1% ABV)
