Islay belongs to the Inner Hebrides in Scotland. The island lies between the Isle of Jura and Northern Ireland. From Ireland, the whisky once crossed over to Islay and thus entered Scotland. The most important place is Bowmore. Other places of interest are Port Ellen and Port Charlotte. The population is just over 3000. With its 8 distilleries, 6 of which produce a smoky whisky, Islay is formally a separate whisky region. It is therefore also known as the Whisky Island.
The second Laphroaig bottling in Speciality Drinks’ Elements of Islay series was released in 2011. The single malt whisky was matured in bourbon casks and bottled at 64.1% (!) cask strength. It received a score of almost 86 points on Whiskybase so far.
The ninth Lagavulin bottling in Elixir Distillers’ Elements of Islay series was released in 2018. The single malt whisky was matured in 2 ex-Laphroaig casks and bottled at 57.6% cask strength. It has received a score of 88 points on Whiskybase so far.
The eighth Caol Ila bottling in Elixir Distillers’ Elements of Islay series was released in 2017. The single malt whisky was matured in five bourbon casks and bottled at 55.2% cask strength. It has received a score of about 86 points on Whiskybase so far.
Don't be put off by the nasty monster on the label! For this Peat Monster, Compass Box brought together a range of peated, bourbon-matured malt whiskies, from those with a sweet smoke to those with heavy peat tones. A blended malt for a great price! (46%)
The whiskies in Decadent Drinks' Equinox & Solstice series are always bottled at the easy drinking strength of 48.5%. That goes also for this Autumn Edition, a Caol Ila single malt whisky that matured for 11 years in an Oloroso European oak cask.
As the name implies, this classic from Ardbeg is 10 years old. A standard bottling that portrays the character of this Islay brand: smoke and peat of course, but also licorice, chocolate, something medicinal. High quality at 46%.
The standard Laphroaig 10 has long been one of the icons of the peated single malt whisky from the Scottish island of Islay. Until recently, the bottle always came in a tube, but since 2023 it comes in a box. The label also has a new design. (40%)
A pretty special bottling, which the Taiwanese The Whisky Blues presents here. It is a Bowmore single malt whisky. You don't often see this as a third-party bottling. The medium-peated Islay malt aged in a sherry cask for 26 years and is bottled at 50.1%.
Port Askaig is a town on the whisky island of Islay. Nearby is the Caol Ila Distillery. Port Askaig is also the brand of a peated Islay single malt whisky bottled by Elixir Distillers. This Cask Strength edition matured in 4 different cask types. (59.4%)
Bowmore, on the Isle of Islay, is one of Scotland's oldest and best-known distilleries. Next to standard bottlings, Bowmore also releases special editions of their single malt whisky, like this one: matured for 21 years in select French wine casks, 48.4%.
In anticipation of the holidays, the Big Peat Christmas Edition for 2023 is already on our shelves. The Big Peat bottlings by Douglas Laing are always blends of peated Islay single malt whiskies. So, 'Big Peat' indeed. (54.8%)
From 2008 to 2010, three Ardbeg Blasda editions were released, experimental bottlings with which Ardbeg wanted to bring out the lighter aspects of its single malt whisky (Blasda is Gaelic for light and tasty). An interesting bottle! (40%)

The fact that single malt whisky often matures in sherry casks is nothing special, but maturation in fino sherry casks is. Fino is a dry sherry that matured under a layer of yeast, the 'flor'. That gives an extra taste experience to this Kilchoman. (50%)
For the 2023 Islay whisky festival Fèis Ìsle, Douglas Laing released another Big Peat, The Smokehouse Edition. Like the other Big Peat bottlings, this is a surprising and seductive blend of peated Islay malt whiskies. Finished in red wine casks. (48%)
In the Symington's Choice series we have seen some stellar bottlings. The vaults of Signatory seem to contain endless hidden treasures. A 1997 aged for 25 years, almost hitting the 90 point mark. We have no doubt this will be good!
This Port Charlotte bottling label lists the names of the Islay farms that supplied the barley for this edition. This firmly peated Bruichladdich whisky is therefore a real Islay single malt. 7 years old, partly matured in red wine casks, bottled at 50%.
A single malt whisky in Islay distillery Ardbeg's core range, matured in new oak, PX sherry and bourbon casks. The new oak barrels give this Islay whisky a character of its own. But of course, there is also enough 'smoke' to smell and taste. At 46.6%.
The Corryvreckan is real classic in the Ardbeg range. With its aromas of peat, smoke, dark fruit, dark chocolate, and hints of herbs and lemon, it is exactly what you can expect from a modern Ardbeg. At 57.1%.
Thanks to the aging on sherry casks in combination with the typical Ardbeg smokiness, the Uigedail is a true classic. The excellent price / quality ratio also plays a role here. A whisky that you make friends with! At 54.2%
Smokehead is the brand under which Ian Macleod bottles anonymous, peated Islay single malt whisky. The type of cask on which the whisky matured can differ, or the alcohol percentage. But never before has a Smokehead finished on tequila casks appeared.
The Wee Beastie bottling is the latest standard edition from Ardbeg. This single malt whisky matured for 5 years in bourbon and sherry casks. Despite being young, the Wee Beastie has complex aromas and notes, a full mouthfeel and a long finish. (47.4%)
New to Elixir Distillers' Elements of Islay series are the Islay blended malt whiskies. Released not in the well-known 50 cl, but in 70 cl bottles. Like this blend of Islay single malt whiskies, that matured in ex-bourbon casks. Bottled at 54.5%.
