The Speyside includes the catchment area of the River Spey with its tributaries. It is not the largest whisky region in terms of area, but with its 50 or so active distilleries, Speyside produces around 50% of all Scotch whisky. For that reason, the Speyside is formally regarded as a separate whiskyregio, although it is in the Highlands. A general characteristic of Speyside whisky could be: not smoky, fruity, flowers.
This Aberlour single malt whisky is bottled especially for the French market. But you'll find it on our shelves now too. The 10-year-old Speysider matured in French oak and is finished in bourbon and sherry casks. Bottled for a nice price at 40%.
This 16-year-old single malt whisky from the Double Cask Matured series by distillery Aberlour is a must for fans of non-smoky, fruity sherried whisky. The influence of the bourbon barrel in the background gives this dram extra depth. Bottled at 43%.

We don't see much Aberlour single malt whisky as an independent bottling anymore, but here is one, released in Signatory Vintage's very affordable Small Batch series. The 12-year-old malt matured in Oloroso sherry casks and was bottled at 48.2%.
In the bourbon cask from which this WhiskySponge bottling comes, 2 Aberlour single malts of different vintages were mixed: one from 1989 and one from 1991, multi-vintage! The youngest counts, so this Aberlour, bottled in 2024, is 33 years old. (49.7%)

This anCnoc is part of the core assortment of the Knockdhu distillery. Bottled at 40% and for a reasonable price, this Highlander offers an aroma profile of malt, honey and wild flowers, with notes of beeswax, nutmeg and herbs.
Bottled in 2021, this 18-year-old anCnoc, in the core range of the Knockdhu Distillery. It matured on bourbon and sherry casks, and was bottled at 46%. The sherry influence is clearly noticeable in the notes of dark fruit and chocolate. A solid dram!
Auchroisk will be an unknown name for many. Fortunately, there is the Discovery series by Gordon & MacPhail. You will find this 10-year-old, bourbon-matured single malt whisky from the Speyside distillery at an affordable price. Creamy and fruity. (43%)
You don't see an Auchroisk single malt whisky of 25 years very often. Signatory Vintage comes here with an edition of 687 bottles. The Speysider first matured in two bourbon casks and was then finished for 65 months in a sherry cask. (48.7%)
You will rarely come across a bottling of the Auchroisk Distillery itself. For this Speyside single malt whisky we have to wait for bottlings like this one by Brachadair. The Auchroisk matured for 8 years on an Oloroso sherry cask and was bottled at 59.7%
This Auchroisk single malt whisky matured for 10 years in a re-charred bourbon cask before bottler Van Wees bottled it at 46% in 2023. Released in the The Ultimate series for a very favorable price, as we have come to expect from this bottler.
