Single malt whisky is a mixture of malt whisky from casks of the same distillery. Malt whisky is made from barley malt and distilled in pot stills, and has matured for at least 3 years in oak barrels. This whisky usually has a for the distillery characteristic flavor. Is considered the classic whisky.
Winter is coming, time for The Winter Edition of Scallywag, Douglas Laing's blended malt whisky brand. For this edition, a number of Speyside single malts matured in different kinds of sherry casks. Bottled at cask strength and with free knitted shawl.
Scapa is the lesser-known of the two Orkney single malt whiskies, and this is a good bottling to get acquainted with it. The whisky matured for 10 years in a small number of bourbon casks and is bottled at 48% ABV. For a reasonable price, it can be yours!
Not as well-known as that other single malt whisky from Orkney, but definitely worth a try, as this Scapa bottling proves. The malt matured for 16 years in American oak casks, resulting in a rich dram with a vibrant and fruity profile. (48%)
Of the two Orkney distilleries, Scapa is the lesser known. Still, it doesn't hurt to take a look at their single malt whisky. Take this 16-year-old bottling, for example, with its waxy mouthfeel and complex nose. Bottled at 40% ABV.
This Lockdown bottling from the Polish The Taste of Whisky proves that there were still things to enjoy during the pandemic. It is an 8-year-old single malt whisky from the Speyside region, matured in 1st-fill bourbon and PX casks. A warming dram. (59.5%)
It doesn't matter that the Speyside distillery has to remain a secret: the fact that the Thompson Brothers selected this single malt whisky gives us enough confidence. An excellent daily dram, matured for 11 years in 2 refill sherry casks. (48.5%)
Japanese bottler T&T Toyama already has several 'young' bottlings to its name. This is one of them: a single malt whisky from the Shindo Distillery, founded in 2021, which approaches whisky-making almost as a science. (3-years-old, bourbon-aged, 63%)
Under the Creetown Distillers brand, Whiskybroker releases a 17-year-old Irish single malt whisky (or 'whiskey', in Irish). We don't know which distillery this malt comes from, but we do know that it matured in three bourbon casks. (41.4%)
Edition no. 9 of Rolf Kaspar's Lichtburg - Historic Series is another 21-year- old Irish single malt whisky. Just like edition no. 8 it matured in an ex-rum cask and of course this malt is also bottled at cask strength (53.5%). Highly recommended!
Smokehead is a single malt whisky brand from bottler Ian Macleod. As with the previous Smokehead bottlings, this is an anonymous peated Islay whisky. Often the age of these bottlings is unknown, but this is a malt that matured for 15 years. (43% ABV)

According to some, this Smokehead Islay single malt whisky is young Caol Ila finished in Ardbeg casks. Perhaps. In any case, this is a beautiful, uncomplicated and pleasantly drinkable dram for the smoky whisky lover. At 40%.
This rum-finished Smokehead isn't all about peat and smoke. The Islay single malt whisky bottled by Ian Macleod has depth and is complex. The rum finish provides fruity and vibrant notes. All in all a very drinkable and original combination. At 46%.
Fruity & Fierce, Spicy & Smooth' is how bottler Ian Macleod characterizes this Smokehead Blast. It is, as always, a peated Islay single malt whisky, but this one is finished in oloroso sherry casks. A full, creamy, complex, and quite smoky dram. (48%)
Smokehead is the brand under which Ian Macleod bottles anonymous, peated Islay single malt whisky. The type of cask on which the whisky matured can differ, or the alcohol percentage. But never before has a Smokehead finished on tequila casks appeared.
It is unknown which distillery this Speyside Region single malt whisky from Archives comes from, but it is a 43 year old! The bottling was released in 2017 and now has a rating of over 91 points on Whiskybase. It's a super dram! (Bourbon matured, 46.5%)
With Cadenhead's Enigma series, you can guess which whisky it is; the bottler doesn't specify, only mentioning the region. Okay, so this Speysider spent the last two of its 12 years maturing in an Oloroso sherry cask and is bottled at 50%.
A young Springbank, but full of flavour! This Campbeltown single malt whisky matured for 5 years in high-quality bourbon casks and is bottled at 100 proof (57.1%). A harmonious and well-balanced dram with notes of fresh fruit, vanilla, and earthy notes.
Springbank is the only larger Scottish distillery where the entire production process of single malt whisky takes place on-site, manually, from malting to cask storage. You can taste that, like with this 10-year-old batch 22/189: a real old-school malt!
Another very interesting bottling from 2020 from the Campbeltown distillery Springbank. This 10-year-old Springbank single malt is distilled from barley from the immediate area. It matured in Oloroso sherry casks and is bottled at 55.6% cask strength.
A new Springbank 15 edition. This single malt whisky from Campbeltown aged in bourbon and sherry casks, and was bottled at 46%. Springbank whisky has its own very recognizable and appreciated character. This also applies to this nicely priced bottle.
For the fans: The Campbeltown distillery Springbank has released a 15-year-old Springbank single malt whisky that has matured in rum casks. It is bottled at 51%. A must, according to insiders!
Campbeltown Distillery Springbank also occasionally does single cask bottlings. In 2017 they released this edition, especially for the Belgian market. The single malt whisky is 16 years old. It spent that time in a 'fresh' bourbon cask. Bottled at 48.1%.
Springbank single malt whisky has always been quirky, with a recognizable profile. If it is aged for 17 years in a mix of casks, including 3 years in casks that contained Madeira, then you really get something special. See this release, bottled at 47.8%.
