A distillery bottling is a bottling by the whisky distillery itself. We also call this 'original brand' bottling or OB. Until the 1970s, there were only 12 distillers in Scotland who released original brands. The whisky from the other distillers that did not disappear into the blends was bottled by independent bottlers.
Almost all distillers now have their own bottlings. This can be standard bottlings that always come in standard quality, or special bottlings in a limited edition. Sometimes even single-cask releases are involved.
But in addition to the OB's, there still appear independent bottlings (IB) from all distilleries.
If you like a sturdy sherried single malt whisky, and you want to try a dram from the young Lindores distillery, then this bottling is definitely an option! The Lowland malt is distilled from regional barley and matured in Oloroso sherry casks. (49.4%)
Whiskymaker Sarah Burgess describes this Nostalgia edition from the English Lakes Distillery as a sensory journey through scents and flavours. The creamy, subtle single malt whisky is matured in Oloroso and bourbon casks and is bottled at 49%.
The Danish Thy Whisky Distillery is a traditional and organic farm distillery. The entire whisky-making process takes place on the farm. This results in, for example, this bourbon and PX and Oloroso-matured single malt whisky: sweet, rich and fruity (48%)
Definitely a bottle for those interested in modern whisky history. This is the 4th edition in the experimental phase of the (re)started Glengyle Distillery at the beginning of this century. This Kilkerran single malt whisky was released in 2012. (46%)
Smokey Virgin, that is The English Whisky Company calls this single malt whisky that came out in their Small Batch Release series. And that is not for nothing. The whisky matured for 6 years in new (virgin) oak casks treated with peat smoke. (46%)
Released of the 20th anniversary of Benromach. Distilled in the first year (1998) of the reopened Benromach distillery and now bottled 20 years later in 2018 to celebrate this milestone.
Not very complex, but a broad and elegant taste palette. Some call this single malt whisky from the Japanese Miyagikyo distillery a 'summer whisky'. Subtle notes of fruit, sherry, wood and grain and a hint of smoke: a pleasantly drinkable dram.
In the Heritage Collection of Lowland distillery Bladnoch, you will also find the successor of the Bladnoch 14. The Bladnoch 16 matured, for 16 years indeed, in Oloroso casks, which resulted in notes like sultanas, orange, fruitcake and chocolate. 46.7%
New bottlings of Glen Albyn single malt whisky, the distillery of which closed in 1983, will hardly be released anymore. That's why this 26-year-old Rare Malts bottling from 2002 is worth attention alone. A Highlander with a character of its own. (54.8%)
Jack Daniel's of course is known worldwide as the Tennessee variety of bourbon whiskey. It is much less known that also rye whiskey is released under the Jack Daniel's brand. We have one here, bottled in 2018 for the German market. Try one? (45%)
Laphroaig hit the bull's eye with its 10-year-old cask strength bottlings. The editions of this Islay single malt whisky have always scored good to very good over the years. So good that for this 14th edition we only have 1 bottle per buyer. (58.6%)
At the time, about 25 years ago, this whisky was only available at the distillery on the Isle of Skye, in a limited edition of 350 bottles. This Talisker single malt of unknown age was very popular with the lucky ones who tasted it! It was bottled at 60%.
Here's another special edition from Highland-distillery Deanston. They previously released 15-year-old bottlings that were finished in Marsala or Sauternes casks; here the single malt whisky was finished in Tequila casks. And that is quite special! 52.5%
The WhistlePig Distillery in Vermont, USA, makes artisanal straight rye whiskey. This rye whiskey from the Old World Rye series is 12 years old. It was finished in madeira, sauternes and port wine casks, so wine casks from the Old World. Bottled at 43%.
Certainly also in view of the price, a good entry-level bourbon, this Wild Turkey 101. Matured in heavily-charred barrels of new white oak and bottled at a robust ABV of 50.5%. A bourbon whiskey to have in your bar as standard.
The Morven is the peated standard bottling of the young Wolfburn distillery. Smoke is clearly but not intrusive present, in the palette. There are also notes of caramel, malt, hay and nuts and, ultimately, some fruit. Worth trying!
The Aurora is one of the core bottlings of the young Highland distillery Wolfburn. Matured for 4/5 in bourbon, for 1/5 in sherry, this 3-year-old malt is a 'best of both worlds' dram. Not very complex, but a nice introduction to this new brand.
The fact that single malt whisky often matures in sherry casks is nothing special, but maturation in fino sherry casks is. Fino is a dry sherry that matured under a layer of yeast, the 'flor'. That gives an extra taste experience to this Kilchoman. (50%)
The Irish Teeling Distillery likes to experiment. This blended whisky, matured in stout beer casks, is a good example. The notes of stout beer combine well with the fruity notes of Irish malt and grain whiskey. For those who want something different!
Langatun Old Deer 2010 Cask Proof
You can’t go wrong with Clynelish single malt whisky; this old-school version is no exception! It’s 29 years old and spent all that time maturing in a bourbon cask before quality bottler Signatory Vintage bottled it in 2003 at cask strength (55.6%.).
This Cairdeas is the bottling with which the Laphroaig Distillery celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2015, especially for the Friends of Laphroaig (cairdeas = friendship). Matured in bourbon casks, bottled at cask strength, this is a real dram to enjoy.
The Woodford Reserve Distillery is in the heart of bourbon country and produces its whisky from copper pot stills. In addition to bourbon, Woodford also makes Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey. A pleasantly drinkable, mild rye whisky for a good price. (45,2%)
